Chapter 11
In the shadows of a tree lines street in the suburbs, a black car lies in wait.
“I can’t believe I’ve become a stalker!” says Jeremy, settled in behind the wheel with enough Vault to get him through the night. “If she won’t talk to me, this is the only way I can protect her. James is evil. I know it’s only a matter of time until he hurts her….well, not if I can help it.”
Suddenly the front porch light comes on and Sheryl slips out and into her car.
“Now where is she going? The doctor put her on bed rest!”
Sheryl pulls out of her driveway and Jeremy proceeds to follow at a safe distance. Soon the lights of suburbia are behind them and they are driving through beautiful farm country.
“Where the hell is she going?” Jeremy slams the steering wheel in frustration. “Wait, she’s pulling over.”
On the side of the road, Sheryl storms toward Jeremy’s car as he pulls in behind her.
“WTF, Jeremy! This has got to stop! I’ve made my choice…the only choice I can make and you have got to deal with it!” Sheryl screams right into his face.
“No! I do not have to deal with it! James is evil. Peach knows it. Meghan knows it. I know it in my heart. The only person doesn’t get it is you! I’m trying to protect you the only way that you will let me. How can I make you believe me?”
Sheryl sighs. “Proof,” she says. “I need proof. You all have your feelings and notions and ideas, but no proof. Right now I have to deal in facts. The fact is I’m pregnant. James is the father. He has agreed to marry me and we are going to raise this child together. I have to think of what’s best for the baby.”
“But what about what’s best for you?” Jeremy says softly.
“I’m a mom now. It’s not about me anymore.” Sheryl looks at the ground.
“Look at you. You’re shaking.” Jeremy says gently taking her hands and rubbing them between his own.
“Stop that.” Sheryl says.
“Stop what?”
“Stop looking at me like that.”
“Looking at you like what?” Jeremy says with a sly smile as he steps in closer.
“Looking at me like you want to…..OW!” The pain is so intense, Sheryl is almost knocked to the ground.
“ Are you Ok? We’ve got to get you home and back into bed.” says Jeremy.
“Oh, you’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
“Oh yeah, you’re real hot right now, pale and doubled over in pain. I can hardly contain myself. Now be still and let me drive.”
Turning the key, Jeremy is greeted by silence.
“It won’t start.” He says.
“Stop messing with me and start the car now.” Sheryl demands.
“I’m not playing. It won’t start. Let’s try yours.” Jeremy says.
Painfully, they make their way to Sheryl’s car and find that it too won’t start.
“What is this, some cheesy horror movie? Two cars that won’t start? What are the odds? says Sheryl.
“Looks like the odds are against us. I see a farm house over there. Let’s see they will let us use their phone.” says Jeremy.
It takes awhile, but Jeremy and Sheryl make it onto the front porch and knock on the front door.
“It’s dark inside. I don’t think anyone is home.” says Sheryl.
Jeremy leaves the front door and looks around for an open window.
“What are you doing?” says Sheryl.
“Looking for a way in. You need to lie down and country folks are always kind to strangers. We’ll just help them help us.” Jeremy finds and open window and slips in.
“I was anxious to add breaking and entering to my to do list for today.”
“You, too? And it’s not breaking, just entering. I’ll meet you at the front door.”
Once inside, they find the master bedroom and Sheryl settles down onto the bed.
“You know, I’m feeling better already. I think I’ll be okay if I can just rest awhile.” Sheryl says.
“Well, that’s good, ‘cause there is no phone.”
“ I can’t believe I left my cell! They’ll come looking for us, won’t they?” Sheryl says hopefully.
“Of course they will. If Peach doesn’t hear from you at least hourly, she’ll put out an all points bulletin.” Jeremy says with a smile.
Sheryl playfully slugs Jeremy in the arm.
“ You better behave or I’ll have to restrain you.” Jeremy says. “Doctor’s orders.”
“Well, you are the professional……I am glad you are here.” Sheryl says shyly.
“Yeah, me too. Why don’t you get some sleep and I’ll keep a look out for our friends.” says Jeremy.
“Thanks.”
Jeremy pauses for a moment at the door to watch Sheryl settle down under the covers. A look of utter sadness crosses his face and he turns away.
